S-traps vs P-traps Toilets
Toilet configurations such as S-traps and P-traps stop malodorous gases and water from flowing back into the toilet and your bathroom. They can also be used as filters to catch debris and other objects that might prevent wastewater from flowing down the sewer line.
Both types of traps take up space, but in different ways—and depending on your bathroom, you may only be able to support one type. You need to draw up an imaginary blueprint of your bathroom and start measuring. How much space is there from the center of the toilet to the wall? This determines whether you can install an S-trap. How much space is there from the center of the toilet to the floor? This will determine if you can get the P-trap to work.
