Toilet Flush Plates & Cisterns: Mechanical or Pneumatic?
A common question when deciding on a toilet flush is the difference between mechanical and pneumatic buttons. Not surprisingly, most people don't even know it's an option. Below we'll go over what each option means and hope to provide you with the best option.
Mechanically operated plates are the most diverse and popular option. Mechanically operated cisterns are always preferred in terms of color, size and shape because of their reliability, ease of maintenance and a more cost-effective approach. When it comes to repairs, most plumbers are familiar with mechanical cistern operations and allow for the widest selection of cistern sizes and shapes. If you require your cistern to stay away from the back of the toilet, the mechanical is not an option.
The pneumatic flush plate is operated by a hose that sends air through the button into the valve. With the hose, the cistern can be placed further away from the toilet. The pneumatic buttons can also be two single buttons without a backplate, enabling greater minimalism from a design standpoint. The two single buttons are also easier to plate with a colored finish, which makes it a strong option when trying to match different colored faucets.
